Pony Play
by Elise Sutton
Where did Pony Play originate from? There seems to be differing opinions about this. There is evidence that suggests that Aristotle loved to be ridden like a pony by women. Some say that he was the first pony boy but I think it is safe to assume that as long as there has been sexuality, men have desired to be ridden around by women as if they were horses. It would be impossible to find out exactly who was the first to try a certain D&S activity or technique or where it originated from. Somewhere along the way, a woman probably got tired of her egotistical and male chauvinistic husband and perhaps they were working out in the barn and she had enough of his bitching, so she grabbed him by his balls and forced him to his knees, threw a saddle over his back, and rode him around the barn. So while pony play became a hot fetish in the 1980’s and 1990’s, it's one that's been around for quite a long time.

But today, there does seem to be an increased interest in Pony Play, especially amongst FemDom couples. Recently, Madonna and her dancers simulated Pony Play during her 2006 concert tour.

As with most FemDom activities, Pony Play can take on many forms and variations. A woman can equestrian train her man in the privacy of their home by riding him around as he is naked on all fours. She may or may not choose to utilize a harness or saddle, as riding a man around bareback can be just as controlling and fun.
When I first became active in Female Domination, Pony Play was known as Equestrian Training. There were entire groups of people dedicated to this particular FemDom practice. Equestrian Training was especially popular in Europe and specifically in Great Britain. That tradition continues today as the majority of Pony Play websites, publications, groups and organizations still originate in Europe.

Equestrian Training also enjoys popularity in the United States, as one cannot attend a Fetish or BDSM event without usually witnessing a public display where women are riding men around as their personal ponies. These displays usually involve the entire gear as the man is wearing a harness, a saddle and has a bit in his mouth so the woman can easily control his movement. The woman will usually be wearing an equestrian outfit, complete with hat, leather gloves, leather boots, spurs and a riding crop.

Some women prefer for Pony Play to be more like piggyback riding where the man is actually standing on his legs and is carrying the woman around on his back.

Then there are forms of pony play where the human male pony is attached to a buggy or a rickshaw and the woman sits in the comfort of the buggy while the male pony pulls her around. In these cases, the woman might prefer using a buggy whip instead of a riding crop to motivate the man and to control his movement and speed.

As one can ascertain, Pony Play can be extremely physically demanding on the man, thus this activity is not for all men. It takes a strong man to be able to engage in the more advanced practices of Equestrian Training. Even just crawling around on all fours with a woman sitting on his back can be physically challenging to a man who is not physically strong and not in excellent physical condition.

What is the appeal of this activity? For the submissive male, it is the feeling of being under the control of a dominant woman. Pony Play combines humiliation play with the feeling of being in bondage. The male is reduced to less than a human being and is treated by the superior female as a mere animal. The man exists for the woman’s comfort and convenience and is regarded as no more than a commodity. This is humiliating for the man and that humiliation may be mentally and sexually stimulating as the man enjoys being used and being controlled by the female.

If a harness or a saddle is placed on the male pony, the man may experience the trill of being in bondage. He losses control as he is forced to go in the direction and at the desired speed of the female, as he is manipulated by the harness or the bit in his mouth or the sting of her whip or the cut of her spurs. The woman has all the power in this scenario and the man is totally under the command and the control of the superior female.

For women, it is this feeling of power and control that makes equestrian training so appealing. The woman who trains her man as her pony during a play session, may find it easier to train him in more practical matters in her everyday life. The purpose of the harness, bit, spurs and whip on a real horse is to break the mighty beast mentally through physical domination so that the powerful animal will eventually become docile and submit to its master without the need for the instruments of discipline and control. Once the animal is broken, it will be at peace being under the control of its owner.

The same law applies here with a male pony. While Pony Play is primarily D&S fun and games (thus the word “play”), the psychological application is that the male is broken through humiliation, bondage and discipline so that the male becomes obedient to his female master and owner. The woman is doing the riding and the training and she is elevated as the conqueror and the male is reduced to her property.

I know couples that really get into this activity. One woman I know has a saddle that was specially made for her husband and she loves to ride him around while he is on all fours.

He also enjoys this activity because of the effects it has on his psyche. To her, equestrian training reinforces her position in the marriage that she is in control. To him, he enjoys being humiliated and controlled because it transports him to subspace. Equestrian Training channels male energy and aggression into this physically demanding activity, thus breaking the male and producing a more docile and obedient husband in their everyday life.

Pony Play is yet another expression within the large FemDom umbrella. Variety truly is the spice of life.
